Look, the world needs another coming-out movie like I need a hole in my head, but sometimes I do see the necessity of continually recycling tired coming-out scenarios because every affirmation—a film, a book, a new queer neighbor, say—pushes folks closer and closer to complete self-acceptance. It's a long process—every little thing helps.
So if you can get around all the afterschool special-like cliches (albeit in a shade of pink), then the 2004 German comedy Guys & Balls is perfectly entertaining. When adorable goalie Ecki gets kicked off his town's soccer team for being gay, he challenges his homophobic teammates to a match to prove that a gay team could beat a straight team. So goes the irresistible premise of this underdog sports movie, and Ecki has just a few weeks to find gay guys who can play soccer and train them before the big game.
